Deborah Simon is a daughter of Melvin Simon, who co-founded Simon Property Group — the largest shopping-mall owner in the United States — and co-owned the Indiana Pacers. She worked at the company for 25 years, rising from assistant to senior vice president, and later ran the family's youth foundation. After her father's death in 2009 she fought a legal battle with her stepmother over changes to his will, which the family settled in 2012.
