Ban stock trading for Congress and top officials
What the bill does
This bill would ban members of Congress, the President, Vice President, and their spouses and dependent children from owning or trading stocks, commodities, futures, and similar investments. They would have to sell any such investments within 90 to 180 days. Exceptions include diversified mutual funds, Treasury bonds, and small businesses. Violators would pay a 10% penalty and give up any profits.
The stakes
This bill aims to prevent lawmakers and top officials from using insider knowledge for personal financial gain. It affects every member of Congress, the President, Vice President, and their families, requiring them to choose between public service and private stock trading.
