Recovering leftover COVID unemployment funds
Sponsored by Beth Van Duyne
What the bill does
This bill creates a task force to find and recover unclaimed pandemic unemployment funds that were sent on prepaid debit cards and are now held by banks or state unclaimed property offices. It also extends the time limit for prosecuting fraud related to those payments from the usual 5 years to 10 years.
The stakes
Taxpayers paid billions in pandemic unemployment benefits, and some of that money ended up in bank accounts or state unclaimed property funds. This bill aims to get that money back, and it gives prosecutors more time to go after people who fraudulently claimed benefits.
