Funding for high-speed rail development
What the bill does
This bill changes how the federal government pays for high-speed rail projects. It allows the government to cover up to 100% of costs, instead of the previous 50% limit. It also lets private companies partner with public agencies to plan and build rail corridors. The bill sets new speed definitions: high-speed rail is 186 mph or more, and higher-speed rail is 110 to 186 mph.
The stakes
This bill could speed up the construction of high-speed rail lines across the country. It affects travelers who might get faster train options, and taxpayers who would pay for the projects.
