Raise savings limit for SSI recipients
What the bill does
This bill raises the amount of money people can have in savings and still qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). For individuals, the limit goes from $2,000 to $20,000. For couples, it goes from $3,000 to $10,000. The limits will also increase each year to keep up with inflation.
The stakes
SSI helps low-income people who are elderly, blind, or disabled. The current savings limits are very low and have not been updated in decades. This bill would let recipients save more money without losing their benefits.
