Expanding emergency savings accounts
What the bill does
This bill raises the limit on emergency savings accounts linked to retirement plans from $2,500 to $5,000. It also broadens who can open these accounts by removing the requirement that they must already be participating in the retirement plan. The changes take effect in 2027.
The stakes
Workers with retirement plans could save more for unexpected expenses without penalties. This affects anyone with a 401(k) or similar plan who wants a safety net for emergencies.
