Background

Elon Musk grew up in a wealthy family in Pretoria, South Africa, and moved to Canada and then the United States. He co-founded the company that became PayPal and sold it in 2002. He put that money into the electric-car startup Tesla, joined as its chairman, and by 2008 was running it as chief executive after its original founders had left. He also founded the rocket company SpaceX and the AI company xAI, and he owns the social network now called X. Since 2025 he has been the richest person in the world.
